How do you make your status visible for your contacts.

I noticed something recently when it comes to viewing status on Whatsapp, there are some of my contacts whose status pop up amongst the first set of status the moment i scroll to the status section, while others i have to scroll down to find them. How do i make my status pop up amongst the first set of status for my contacts? Do i have to constantly chat with them for this to happen, or do i have to constantly view and interact with their status for them to be able to see mine?
