How does YouTube detect paid traffic?

I heard that if YouTube discovers that a particular person is using paid traffic, they would rank the channel low and possibly penalize it.

But is is really a straightforward thing for YouTube to detect paid traffic? Would someone using paid traffic ever be caught by YouTube? How?

I think the YouTube uses some unique tools that helps the Google detects the nature of the traffic it receives.

Google use bounce rate to determine if you are using fake traffic. Once the bounce rate is high in your view rating; Google will start monitoring your channel. I still believe that Google is still using other complex technologies to monitor YouTube channels.

What do you actually mean by paid traffic? If you run ads on social media and get traffic to youtube, it is also paid traffic. Do you mean both traffic or traffic exchange?
