Freelancing on sites like Upwork and Fiverr is safe. Your funds are protected by Escrow. However, scams usually happen on lesser-known freelancing sites or job sites. Starting on your own through social sites or forum marketplaces can get you scammed. Also, a lot of people get scammed when the job provider ask for payment for “training” or “job access.” Legit jobs or employers never ask you to pay upfront.

Places like Upwork and Fiverr are safer because the system holds payments until the work is done. The risk rises when you move to smaller sites or try private deals with strangers online. Many people fall for those offers that require an entry fee or some kind of paid orientation. A real employer pays you for your work. They do not charge you to join.

For me, I don't accept gigs from any client that doesn't have something to lose. It tries to reduce the rate of scams.
