A billionaire-backed philanthropic organization is funding the development of a series of new observatories. These include a space telescope larger than Hubble that its backers say can be built at a fraction of the cost and on a much faster schedule.
They say the telescope will have three instruments, a planet-finding phonograph, a high-resolution wide-field camera, and a light-splitting spectrograph that will study the atmospheres of distant worlds, dissect the light from exploding stars, and tackle mysteries such as the nature of dark energy.
