A UN source told the BBC that a landslide in the isolated Marra Mountains in western Sudan has killed at least 370 people. The location was extremely difficult to access, making it difficult to find out the precise number of fatalities or the extent of the tragedy, according to Antoine Gérard, the UN's deputy humanitarian coordinator for Sudan. The armed group in charge of the affected area, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), had previously said that up to 1,000 people might have killed.

A massive landslide in the village of Tarasin in the Jebel Marra Mountains of western Sudan has killed more than 1,000 people, with only one survivor, according to the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) movement, which controls the area. The tragedy, triggered by heavy rains in a conflict-affected and remote region, has prompted an urgent call to the UN and international organizations for assistance in the recovery of bodies and humanitarian assistance.
