I decided to stop writing on Medium. I already submitted 7 articles of varied topics at 2000 words each but I was messaged by Medium staff that I need to pay for a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly subscription before they publish my articles. How could that be possible when I was not alerted before submitting those articles. I got viewers and commenters. I was a little bit confused. I am willing to subscribe yearly, but I need assurance that they pay writers. $3 weekly subscription is not hard for me, but they should have told me before everything else. Their style discourages me to the max.

I can relate to your frustration with Medium’s publishing model. Submitting several long articles without being told upfront about subscription requirements feels misleading. Transparency should be the first step in any platform that claims to support writers. From what I’ve seen, Medium does pay writers, but only if their work is part of the Partner Program, which requires readers to be subscribers. That means your earnings depend on how much time paying members spend reading your articles. The subscription fee you mentioned is not directly for publishing, but rather for accessing the program and its benefits. Still, the way they communicated with you seems discouraging, especially after you already invested time and effort. If you’re willing to subscribe yearly, I’d suggest confirming the exact terms of payment and eligibility before committing. Writers deserve clarity, and platforms should respect that by being upfront from the start.

I was pissed off when I received the emails from the Medium staff suggesting me to choose the subscription rate and the mode of payment. I did not reply but blocked the site.

A lot of sites are beginning to do this. You have to buy their subscription now to even earn from their sites

Agree, but I was not told beforehand. If I only knew, I would not hesitate. It was devastating, just imagine those articles that I submitted. I spent hours writing and developing them.
