Most business owners have secretaries that manage their own personal schedules and tasks. Some people say that a secretary can't leave the office before the boss leaves.

How true is that?

In the place where l currently work, the secretaries are obliged to leave when the time is over irregardless of the boss leaving time.
I think that is fair enough. Unless the secretary doubles as the personal assistant to the boss, he or she might have to stay put.

I worked in a office where we staff left by 6.30pm but our boss stayed back and worked.

Once the time of the work , the secretary can go without breaking the ethics of thr profession. But some secretary do go extra mile to win the heart of the owner of the business.

The truth is that some bosses are just so arrogant and would compel the secretary to stay put because he or she, the boss has not left yet. It is a very terrible situation. And when you look at the amount they are paying the secretary, it is probably peanuts.

A secretary also has working hours so that when the boss is still busy and it's time to go home from work, the secretary should ask permission from the boss first before going home.
That's right but you know when you go to ask permission to go home then you are not following the official time because the boss can give a no answer which will keep you longer than the due time

In my country working hours are set at 8 hours a day, the rest is counted as overtime hours, if the boss forces you to follow their rules then if there is no overtime pay, then it is better to change jobs.

It depends, back then my boss usually allows the secretary leave like an hour before closing because her place was pretty far. If it's almost the closing times, and it's okay by the secretary, then I don't see anything wrong.
