Of course, this act is punishable by law. Anyone involved in this crime cannot escape punishment by law unless the victim doesn’t sue the person to court. Moral defamation s a legal and moral concept often evident in cases of murder or negligence. It involves the violation of a person’s right to privacy and freedom from unfounded claims.

One form of moral defamation is libel and slander. A statement is automatically defamatory if it is false or based on a false statement about a person, especially concerning serious crimes, infectious diseases, or incompetence.

To prove defamation, the following elements must be present: imputation, publication, malice, identifiability, and damage to reputation. Victims of defamation can seek legal remedies through civil or criminal proceedings. Civil remedies include claiming damages for harm to reputation, while criminal charges can result in fines and imprisonment.

In my country, this is considered as a crime. Be it moral defamation, or defamation in general, it is a crime.
Indeed, it's a crime punishable by law. Someone in our neighbourhood slandered her neigbor accusing her as prostitute she was charged, jailed and paid a moral damage of 1 million. The neigbor she slandered worked in a multi national company and she's assigned in a night shift which is why she arrived home early morning.

We do have punishment for defamation but in the form of compensation but the present has started arresting people if someone speaks against them.

That's a good one, if people are being arrested like this, there would be a lower rate of people gossiping without any proper evidence.

That is right, the perpetrators must be punished so others will not do the same act. Their arrests will serve as a lesson and an example not to emulate by greedy people @aninditasen
