Is opening a religious institution a form of business that people can expect profitability?

Disclaimer: The intent of this thread is not to bash religious institutions or the likes.

I live in a religious country and it seems like the religious sector is now considered a business. You would hear people say that they are working on building their religious institutions, that the institution would start paying them and they would profit from it.

Can one really view religious institutions and approach them as businesses with profitability as a main goal.
In India there's no such religious institution that gives profit. There are lot of temples, churches and mosques. They are usually built by a group of people who fund them and run them.
