According to the report, beginning in February, cellular phone use will be prohibited in Israeli elementary schools, Education Minister Yoav Kisch announced on Thursday, saying the policy aims to reduce distractions and strengthen students’ social and emotional development. Kisch said the move is designed to encourage face-to-face interaction and create a learning environment free from constant screen exposure.
The report also stated that Kisch emphasized that the decision is part of a broader systemic effort to reduce distractions, strengthen social ties, and ensure optimal conditions for learning. Mobile phones will be allowed only in specific classes where their use is approved for educational purposes.
The report also said that the ministry plans to support schools through educational programs in classrooms and dialogue with parents, aiming to foster balanced phone use, prevent social media misuse, and limit exposure to inappropriate content. The emphasis is on cultivating social and emotional skills and encouraging face-to-face interaction among students.
The report added that Senior Deputy Director Ina Salzman said studies show a link between frequent phone use and lower academic performance, adding that early exposure to smartphones makes breaking the habit more difficult.
Education Ministry Director General Meir Shimoni said the February rollout allows time for adjustment, noting that implementation will be gradual.
