From the Rome, Italy report, a 50-year-old journalist from Perugia, Laura Santi, became the latest person in Italy to commit assisted suicide on Tuesday when she self-administered a lethal drug. Santi, who was suffering from advanced-stage multiple sclerosis, took her own life with her husband Stefano beside her, the right-to-death Luca Coscioni Association said in a statement.
The report said that Santi ended her life because she could no longer bear the worsening condition of her health caused by multiple sclerosis. Before her suicide, she explained her reasons. Her ferocious conditions defied her will to live.
In addition to the report, several people have been helped to commit assisted suicide in Italy by the Coscioni association, which took the terminally ill to the Dignitas Clinic near Zurich to end their lives before a landmark 2019 ruling by the Italian supreme court that stated assisted suicide is legal in some cases.
The ruling laid down strict markers on cases in which assisted suicide is legitimate and called on parliament to end a legislative vacuum on end-of-life issues. The parties supporting Premier Giorgia Meloni's government have presented a bill aimed at filling this vacuum.
