Kanlaon Volcano may have a hazardous eruption in the next few weeks

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has increased the warning level for Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island, Philippines, to level 3, signifying magmatic activity. This points to a potentially disastrous eruption in the coming weeks. On Monday, the volcano had an enormous explosion that lasted 3 minutes and 55 seconds.

They advise residents to steer clear of the 6-kilometer danger zone surrounding the volcano. According to PHILVOCS chief Bacolcol, Kanlaon Volcano has previously emitted ash and steam, but the current problem concerns magma. He clarified: "When we talk about a magmatic eruption, it means there is magma coming out. However, we have not yet observed that at Kanlaon Volcano."

Because of the volcano's activity, many people of Negros Occidental have evacuated their houses and are seeking refuge in schools. The Department of Health has advised affected residents to wear masks and long sleeves. They should also secure their homes by locking doors and windows and keeping their pets inside enclosures.
