I think it's high time parents of daughters in India should start refusing marriage proposals from families thar demand dowry. If the greedy families and their men face continuous rejection dowry deaths will come to an end. Dowry has been illegal in India since 1961. However still Indians are treating dowry deaths as normal.

Although dowry has been banned in India since 1961, it remains a common practice that leads to extreme violence against women, including thousands of deaths annually from harassment, torture, and murders related to economic demands. Nearly a third of these deaths occur in the state of Uttar Pradesh alone, one of the worst affected states, demonstrating that legislation alone has failed to eradicate this brutal tradition. Rejecting proposals from families demanding dowry is a crucial way to begin to curb this systematic violence.

@aninditasen can you please explain the concept of dowry and dowry death to me. Is it a criminal offence?
In India families usually arrange their children's marriage. The proposal comes either from the man's or woman's family. Now this proposal turns into a negotiation for money, jewelry and other home essentials like furniture and gadgets which the man's family demand from the woman's family. This demand of money and other goods is called dowry. Some families of the husband's side keep demanding for more even after marriage and when they are not met by the wife's family they kill the woman, bride, wife. This is called dowry death. Asking for dowry and killing the bride both are punishable according to Indian law but yet they are going on.

You are right. Parents should reject boys demanding dowry and the daughters should cooperate.

How do they go about killing the lady? Is it through mystic means or through physical means? Please clarify on this. Would love to learn.

They beat up her to death or poison her or burn her alive. In India the men are physically stronger than the women and can easily overpower them.

That's sad that girls and the families who are educated get trapped and become victim of dowry.
It can only be wiped out by the girls family. Make the girls self sufficient so that they can drive away those boys who ask for dowry and live their lives independently.
