According to the report, Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Lima, where he will meet outgoing US President Joe Biden before Donald Trump takes the reins.
The report said that on the sidelines of the summit, Xi inaugurated a massive deep-water port in Peru, a $1.3 billion investment by Beijing aimed at expanding trade and influence in the region. Xi described the Chancay port, with 15 berths, as the beginning of a "21st-century maritime Silk Road," part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, a modern revival of the ancient Silk Road trading route.
However, former US General Laura Richardson has raised concerns. The American military is wary that the Chinese army could use this port in Peru, fearing that Chinese ships may dock there and the facility could be used for espionage.
In response, the US State Department has issued new warnings, urging Latin American nations to remain vigilant. Only China knows the real thing. It is best to observe though to be safe. China is a traitor to my country.
