I am running a musical band as a side hustle. I have a drummer. When we were struggling, he was the only staff that didn't leave. He played many shows for us without getting a dime. Things have improved and the band has grown numerically and we have more shows. Bigger shows.

His skill level can't match up the kind of shows we are getting now. But he is very loyal. He runs errands and seeks out the success of the band. But I always have to hire an external drummer for those big shows, hoping he would learn. The last show, I decided not to hire a drummer but I was so disappointed that I had to play the drums myself.

Should I drop this my loyal man for incompetence?

It would take patience for one to manage such a staff to come up. The question is if you are ready for that level of patience.
