According to the news on Saturday, an extra 217 Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti to strengthen security efforts aimed at restoring order amidst the ongoing violence on the Caribbean island. The United Nations estimates that a staggering 85% of Port-au-Prince is controlled by criminal gangs. In spite of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) deployment under UN auspices last June, the situation remains dire.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime warmly welcomed the Kenyan troops at the airport in Port-au-Prince. This new deployment will reinforce the initial batch of 400 officers who were sent in 2024. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime emphasized the significance of these reinforcements, stating, “The arrival of these reinforcements marks a crucial step in liberating our country from the clutches of criminal networks and restoring peace.”

In 2024, gang violence claimed the lives of 5,601 individuals, representing a huge increase of approximately 1,000 compared to the number reported in 2023.
