A NASA research plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Texas without using its wheels, skidding off the runway on its belly and causing a fireball to erupt behind it. The incident occurred at Ellington Airport, southeast of Houston, and fortunately all crew members on board are safe. NASA confirmed in a post on X, saying the technical issue would be investigated.
The plane is a WB-57, known for its slim design and the ability to carry two crew members. It can fly for six and a half hours at an altitude of more than 63,000 feet. Video of the incident shows the plane descending slowly, then hitting the runway with a thud, wings flapping as yellow flames and white smoke billowed from beneath it.
The plane continued to slide at a steady pace, flames erupting and then disappearing in a cloud of smoke. Its speed eventually began to slow before the video cuts off, marking the end of the terrifying but bravely controlled event.
