The National Assembly has commenced deliberations on a fresh round of constitutional amendments seeking the creation of 55 additional states and 278 new local government areas across the country.

The proposal by the National Assembly to amend the constitution and create 55 new states along with 278 additional local government areas is, in my opinion, a misguided move. Nigeria already faces deep administrative and financial burdens managing its current 36 states and 774 local governments. Adding more would only increase government spending, deepen political complexity, and stretch resources that are already insufficient.
What the country truly needs is stronger governance, better accountability, and fairer resource distribution—not more states that may serve political interests rather than public benefit. Many existing local governments already struggle to pay workers, maintain infrastructure, or deliver basic services. Creating more without addressing these fundamental issues risks worsening inefficiency. A constitutional amendment should aim to fix structural weaknesses and promote national unity, not multiply divisions or add unnecessary layers of bureaucracy.

@gwolf666 you are so right, you have said it all. What the country need right now is good governance. @Starmix adding new states won't benefit us in anyway. I see this as a way they pocket more money for themselves.
