NBA league for many years had same format. Teams were in several divisions and at end few best from each division goes in playoff.
Now NBA have new tournament. Name is NBA cup and it is played in same time as regular league. Format is little differenet. There is 5 groups and later they go in knock out phase.
This is similar to Football cup tournamet in Europe. Looks American took something from Europe tradition this time.
