new study highlighted an ecological crisis, finding that more than 60,000 African penguins from key breeding colonies on Dassen and Robben Islands starved to death between 2004 and 2012 due to collapsed sardine stocks. The species, now classified as Critically Endangered, relies on these fish. The collapse is attributed to climate change and overfishing.
