About forty students from Collège catholique Samuel-Genest were left stranded after their bus driver abandoned the bus mid-ride and disappeared. The incident occurred Friday afternoon in the Ottawa School Transportation Consortium parking lot near the St-Laurent shopping centre.
An email sent to parents explained that the driver lost patience with the violence of some students. That’s when he decided to abandon the bus.
Cristina Carvalho, the mother of one of the students, described her fear after her daughter called 911. Police arrived quickly and took control of the students. She said the children’s lives were in the hands of the drivers and this incident was terrifying.
Some students got off and headed to the St-Laurent shopping centre, while others remained on the bus. A replacement driver was dispatched to drive the remaining students to their usual stop.
The Consortium’s director, Patrick Pharand, confirmed that the driver was immediately fired and condemned the act. He added that in his entire career, he had never witnessed an incident like this.
Ottawa Police are currently investigating to determine what led the driver to take this unusual action.
