The Philippines and the United States have agreed to further cooperation on space technology, including its use for maritime domain surveillance of Manila’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. Both sides held the inaugural bilateral space dialogue in Washington on May 2, aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation on outer space innovation, including the use of space-based Earth observation satellite data for a wide variety of socioeconomic applications.
News said that the delegations recognized the potential for expanded cooperation on the use of space for maritime domain awareness, including through the US Department of Transportation-led SeaVision program. It added that such programs can help monitor and document vessels in the Philippines’ territorial waters and EEZ to ensure the safety of mariners at sea. It also helps monitor and protect the environment and helps combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing by the Chinese.
