The latest report sad that a wooden Filipino fishing boat was allegedly rammed by an unidentified vessel in the vicinity of the Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea last January 30. Five of rhe fishermen were rescued by a passing Vietnamese ship 17 days after the incident. Tree other fishermen are still missing.
Lt. Commander Michael John Encina Ph Coastguard deputy spokeperson and Bataan Station Commander, said rhe wooden fishing boat FBCA Elmo 2 was reportedly rammed by an unknown ship. Lt. Encina extended his thanks to the Vietnamese ship for rescuing the Filipino fisherman but so sad, three fishermen are still missing .
Lt .Encina said that it was not certain that ramming incident was intentional because some vessels go on autopilot and might have not noticed the small boat, which was estimated to be only around three gross tons.
The Lt. Commander has also coordinated with the Vessel Traffic Management System to check if they have kept the files for January 30, to shed light on what took place in the Spratly and hopefully identify the other vessel involved in the incident
