Unnecessary procedures often permeate public administration, and Greater Vancouver is no exception. To highlight the worst examples of unreasonable regulations, the Canadian Federation of Small Business (CFIB) organizes its annual Red Tape Heavyweight Awards.

Vincent Pâquet, senior policy analyst at CFIB, explained the 2026 edition of the awards. He said that since 2025, the Greater Vancouver Regional District has implemented a household registry where every resident is required to register their household or face a $500 fine.

This measure comes with a lot of forms to fill out and requirements to follow. That’s why CFIB decided to award the District this year, stressed Pâquet, as an example of regulations that oppress citizens without reason.
