Parks Canada has issued a safety alert reminding the public that the Rideau Canal and its gates are not a place for unauthorized activities such as ski jumping. Violators can be fined up to $10,000 under the Trespassing Act.

The warning came after a video went viral showing a young man attempting to ski over the gates in Ottawa. His attempt ended in a fatal fall. The video has been viewed more than 1.7 million times on Instagram.

Skier Tai How admitted that the video was recorded in February 2025 and posted in December by a group called Jetskis. Parks Canada said that while it has not confirmed the authenticity of the incident, it decided to warn the public because of the danger.

The Rideau Canal gates are closed to the public from October to May and are not maintained during that time. The freezing temperatures present hidden dangers. That's why security has been beefed up around the gates.

How, 21, said he doesn't care about the viral video and feels it's important to push the boundaries of his abilities. He admitted he hurt his finger but wasn't scared.

Stuntman Jean Frenette, with 45 years of experience, warned that the approach was wrong. He said the film plans and calculates everything precisely, unlike the young man's attempts.

Parks Canada stressed that the Rideau Canal is a great place for walking and skating in designated areas, but extreme sports and ice swimming are prohibited.
