Roman Catholic Church leader, Pope Leo XIV has listed Nigeria among countries where Christians face discrimination and persecution, alongside Bangladesh, Mozambique, Sudan, and others.

The pontiff made the remarks on Sunday, Novemebr 16 via his official X account, expressing concern over frequent attacks on Christian communities and places of worship. He urged prayers for peace and solidarity among all believers.

From my perspective, Pope Leo XIV's statements on the situation in Nigeria are very important and reflect a reality that often doesn't receive enough attention. The persecution and discrimination against Christians in various countries, including Nigeria, are issues that affect religious freedom and basic human rights. It is sad that in the 21st century, in some places, religious communities still have to live in fear and uncertainty due to attacks and hostility. The Pope's call to pray for peace and solidarity seems essential to me, because in times like these, unity and prayer can be a source of hope and strength for those who suffer. I hope that these words will help raise awareness and serve to spur concrete actions that protect religious communities and promote tolerance throughout the world.

At some point one of two things is going to happen....
(1) The Christian peoples in the north being terrorized are going to start fighting Boko Haram and/or the Fulani raiders and/or (2) an outside power (read, the United States) is going to start leaning very hard on Abuja to do something or else get out of the way and let them deal with it (and the U.S. won't be kind about it either).
