Romania is the second NATO nation to proclaim that a Russian drone has entered its airspace. According to a statement from the defense ministry, Romanian fighter jets were able to follow the drone close to Ukraine's southern border while they were in the air on Saturday, keeping an eye on a Russian attack in Ukraine. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the assault was "an obvious expansion of the war by Russia" and could not have been an accident. Regarding the Romanian charges, Moscow has remained silent. Poland claimed to have shot down at least three Russian drones that had intruded into its airspace on Wednesday.

It’s hard to ignore the implications of these repeated drone incidents in NATO countries. When Romania confirms that a Russian drone entered its airspace, especially so close to Ukraine’s southern border, it’s not something that can just be brushed off as an accident. Drones don’t usually drift without purpose; they’re guided, and their presence sends a message whether intended or not. Zelensky is right in pointing out that this looks like an expansion of the war, or at the very least, a serious provocation.
What makes it even more concerning is that this isn’t an isolated event. Poland recently reported shooting down multiple drones as well, which suggests a pattern rather than random mistakes. If NATO nations keep experiencing these intrusions, the alliance could eventually be forced to respond more directly, and that escalates risks for everyone involved.
