Rubio says it is too early for high-level Russia discussions

On Thursday, Marco Rubio, the U.S. According to the Secretary of State, it's too soon for high-level talks with Russia, given the uncertainty of Moscow's response to US attempts to de-escalate the Ukraine conflict. Following preliminary Saudi Arabian talks, Rubio, responding to a reporter's question about the need for more serious discussions, stated that "We need to make more progress on a technical level."

Rubio, on a flight back to Miami after a Caribbean trip, explained that a timeline for progress was unavailable due to factors outside the U.S.'s control. He added that the Trump administration would hold discussions to review the meetings. A meeting between US President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly in the works, possibly taking place soon in Saudi Arabia.

This past Tuesday, the United States reported that Russia and Ukraine had mutually agreed to halt their Black Sea attacks. Russia later imposed conditions, however, seeking relief from the harsh Western sanctions implemented following its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
