Police in India have rescued a 40-year-old Russian woman, Nina Kutina, and her two young daughters who had been living in a cave for seven years after their visas expired. They were found in the Ramateertha area, near the spiritual town of Gokarna, in Karnataka state.

The discovery was made on July 11 when police were patrolling after a landslide and saw clothes hanging outside the cave. When they approached, they found Nina and her daughters, ages 4 and 6. Inside the cave, she had created a shrine with an idol of the god Rudra, spending her time meditating and performing rituals.

The family lived on instant noodles and slept on plastic sheets. Police were amazed at how they managed to survive without serious injuries. After their rescue, they were temporarily taken to a nearby ashram.

Nina said that life in the jungle was a “good experience” and her daughters were in good health. They played, learned art, bathed in waterfalls and enjoyed nature.

Investigations revealed that Nina entered India on a business visa that expired in 2017. Since then, she has traveled to many countries including Costa Rica, Malaysia, Bali, Thailand and Nepal. After the death of her eldest son, she decided to stay in India for a longer period.

Authorities have now begun the process of repatriating Nina and her daughters to Russia, a country she has not visited in over 15 years. It is not known whether the children were born in India or during one of her trips.
