In January 1986, the village of Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac attracted thousands of people after statues of the Virgin Mary were seen weeping tears, sometimes tears of blood. Believers crowded into the small chapel in the home of Maurice Girouard and Claudette Vézina to witness the miraculous event.
The source of the tears began on December 11, when Girouard’s friend, Jean-Guy Beauregard, saw the statue weeping in his room in Montreal. When he took the Rosa Mystica statue home, other statues of the Virgin also began to shed tears.
Girouard described how their house was filled with the scent of roses all night, which made it difficult for them to sleep or even eat. He admitted that his past life was full of vices, but that he had now changed and dedicated himself to faith.
During the event, thousands of people lined up for five to seven hours in the freezing cold to see the statues. The Girouard family distributed rosaries to the waiting guests.
Reports indicated that tears were shed after Girouard and Beauregard’s private prayers. At the time, people outside claimed to have seen the sun rotate on its axis.
Claudette Vézina, in a powerful voice, urged people to pray regularly to “save the world.” In an interview, she was held by the shoulders by a man wearing a white robe with the sign of the cross, seemingly signifying the seriousness of the event.
