Should I take a percentage from the side hustles that my employees initiate but use company facilities?

Employees can initiate some side hustles for themselves to make more money. For instance, teachers in a school can organize extra lessons on their own. They would obviously use the school classrooms and utilities. Should the business owner get a percentage from the earnings from such side hustles?

On the other hand, teachers might argue that these lessons are outside their contracted hours, and they are sourcing their own students and income. If the school demands too much of a cut, teachers may feel exploited, since they’re the ones doing all the work

As long there is an agreement i don't see anything wrong with taking a percentage because they are using your equipments and resources, especially if it is something that requires constant maintenance.

If the teachers are working after hours and using the school facilities, it makes sense for the owner to ask for a small contribution. The school carries the cost of the building and equipment, so a shared benefit feels fair. At the same time the teachers should keep most of the earnings because the work is theirs. Clear rules help prevent misunderstandings later.

If the company is certain that the staff are being properly paid, they would ask them for a small 5% from their proceeds.

I agree with this. If they are using the company's property then it is fair that they remit things no matter how small.

As a good business person, it is important that you take time to appreciate your staff who've been contributing to the growth of your business by giving them a chance to grow and taking a percentage from them will never support their growth at all.
