When we talk about service providers, they include professionals and artisans that people contact to come do a particular job for them. Should a small service provider impose a booking fee before they sit down and make negotiations with a client?

Setting a booking fee can definitely help cover other cost, and reduce the issue of no show but it can also have a negative effect, as most of them might not be willing to pay. At the end of the day, it depends on your clients.

Yes. The success of a business that institutes a booking fee policy largely depends on the level of loyalty of its customers. Customers who are less loyal will not condone the booking fee. They will walk away to other businesses.

I have a booking fee for talking to me in regards my professional services. It makes customers value my professionalism.

A booking fee can be helpful, but it depends on the context. For small service providers, it signals professionalism and ensures clients are serious. The fee shouldn’t be too high, or it might discourage new clients. Clear communication is essential, letting clients know the fee is part of the process builds trust. This way, the provider secures commitment while still leaving room for negotiation.
