Someone said that money is not paper but the value that one has.

Someone said to me today that money is not the physical cash that is held. That money is nothing but the value that a thing or entity has. How does this make sense? Can someone explain this concept to me?
I He said the truth. Money is ordinary paper which hold no intrinsic value on itself. Money is just expression of the value of a thing.
 
I think what the person was trying to explain is that having money is not just about the amount you have in hand but it is more about your total worth or value.
