Staff of a business organization contributing money to a colleague that has a celebration: Healthy or Not?

In some business organizations in my country, the staff always contribute money to support a staff that has a celebration like marriage, child dedication, house warming and other kinds of celebrations. Do you think this practice is healthy for a business team in the long run?

It is normal for staff of an organization to support and celebrate with their colleagues. It just has to be managed well.

It is common for staff to contribute gifts or money to celebrate with their colleagues on special occasions. This will help to foster good relationship.

Personally i don't see anything wrong with this though, i feel this would also help create a sense of unity in the organization if done properly.

For the staff of the organization to go to the extent of contributing for a Co-staff's celebration, it means they have a family atmosphere in the organisation. And that is good for the organization going forward.

In my place of work, some people has started abusing that privilege. Some selfish workers don't want to contribute when the person they're contributing to is not a favourite colleague. Others see it as a burden especially when they're going through financial stress.
