U.S. Supreme Court today heard oral arguments in a case that could fundamentally reshape the balance of power between the federal government and the states, and redefine how key industries are regulated. Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo directly challenges the 1984 precedent of Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, a foundational ruling that instructs courts to defer to federal agencies' reasonable interpretations of ambiguous statutes passed by Congress. The plaintiffs, a group of commercial fishing companies, are contesting a rule from the National Marine Fisheries Service, but their broader goal is to overturn Chevron deference entirely.
