The report said that the Israeli military on June 4 said it struck Syria, targeting the current government’s weapons after Tel Aviv reported two projectiles were fired from Damascus. Around the same time that Israel reported the projectiles from Syria, the IDF said it intercepted a ballistic missile from Yemen. While the Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the missile attack, reports claimed that a group ‘aligned with Hamas’ said it was behind the rocket strike from Syria.

The report added that several Arab and Palestinian media outlets circulated a claim of responsibility from a little-known group named the Muhammad Deif Brigades. The group’s name is an apparent reference to the Palestinian armed group Hamas’ military leader, who was killed in an Israeli strike in 2024 during the war in Gaza. The Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, said in a statement on June 4 that a” full response will follow shortly”, adding that he held the Syrian regime led by Ahmed al-Sharaa “directly responsible".
