According to recent reports, Sher Abbas Stanikzai, the Foreign Ministry's political deputy, remarked on Saturday that there is no reason to restrict education to Afghan women and girls. He highlighted that, just as there was no reason for such denial in the past, there should be none today. His comments were made at a religious school event.
The Afghan government has prohibited girls from pursuing education beyond sixth grade. According to reports, authorities suspended medical courses and training for women in September of last year. Only female doctors and experts can treat girls and women. In a video posted on his official account on the social media platform X, Sher Abbas Stanikzai urged officials to "open the doors of education." He stated, "We are committing an injustice against 20 million people out of a population of 40 million by depriving them of all their rights." This does not conform to Islamic law but is influenced by our personal decisions or preferences."
Sher Abbas Stanikzai previously headed the Taliban team in negotiations that resulted in the evacuation of all foreign military from Afghanistan.
