Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has secured a landslide re-election victory, winning 97.66 percent of the vote, according to official results announced by the Tanzanian electoral commission on state television on Saturday, November 1.

The result came after a highly controversial election marked by the jailing or disqualification of key opposition candidates, widespread violence, and a nationwide communications blackout.

State TV reported that Hassan would be swiftly sworn in following the announcement of results.

The main opposition party, Chadema, claimed that hundreds of people were killed by security forces after protests erupted across the country on election day, Wednesday, October 29. “Around 700 people have been killed,” a Chadema spokesman told AFP, citing figures gathered from hospitals and health clinics nationwide.

From my perspective, the election results in Tanzania raise many doubts and concerns. President Hassan's 97.66% of the vote, amidst a process marked by controversy, repression, and tight control of information, makes it difficult to trust the legitimacy of the results. The accusation that hundreds of people were killed by security forces during the protests is very serious and points to a possible excessive use of force and a lack of respect for human rights. Transparency in these electoral processes is essential for the international community and citizens themselves to have confidence in the results. When an electoral process is marred by violence and exclusion, the legitimacy of democracy in that country is called into question. It is important that independent investigations be carried out and that the rights of all actors involved be respected.
