Teach your child the value of frugality and train him to apply it in a way he can embrace ot without sacrificing his future. A child is easy to train and adapt to a new lifestyle. He may find it awkward but after some days, he feels the beauty of it and gets used to the new face of the changes. One concrete example is to train the child to bring his home-cooked food to school including his snacks prepared by his mom. This way the child will also train himself to save his allowance. He will grow mature and responsible and know the value of money and the value of living in frugality.

Actually, you also have a point as far as my observation to my young nieces and nephews is concerned . Their parents trained them to bring their food and snacks to school but the kiddos cried . They said they're ashamed because their classmates eat in the school canteen . So the kids won.
