The Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89 in Lagos State
Oba Menu-Toyi I, fondly known as Oba Akran, died on January 12, 2026, following a brief illness, bringing to an end a remarkable reign that spanned nearly five decades, making him one of Lagos State’s longest-serving traditional rulers.

The news about the death of His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, fondly abbreviated as Oba Akran, represents the end of an era in the state of Lagos. Personally, what strikes me most is that he ruled for nearly five decades, and he was undoubtedly one of the most respected traditional leaders in the area. In my opinion, the greatest importance of his death and, conversely, the importance of the death of anyone, can be seen in the fact that for nearly five decades, he ruled the people with his traditions and cultural heritage, and in the state of Lagos, he will always be associated with the town of Badagry and its surroundings. What strikes me in particular is that he was so old, yet he was always in the spotlight until the end of his life, and this proves that he was undoubtedly passionate about the people he ruled. In my opinion, the greatest importance of his death is that he now represents the end of the era in the state of Lagos, and there will be someone, yet there will not be someone like Oba Akran.
