The Federal Government has announced that English will now serve as the primary medium of instruction in all Nigerian schools, officially cancelling the national policy that required teaching in indigenous languages.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday, November 12, while speaking with journalists at the Language in Education International Conference 2025 organised by the British Council in Abuja.

The two-day conference, themed “Language, Education and Inclusion: Empowering Every Learner,” brought together educators, policymakers, researchers, and development partners from across Africa, South Asia, and the United Kingdom to discuss language-based strategies for inclusive education

Wow, the move by the Nigerian government has created a buzz. Now English is the language of instruction in all schools and the policy of using local languages has been completely abolished. They say it will help standardization and children get better results. But the truth is that some see it as erasing the country's culture and identity in the classroom. Now the debate is heated. Some are celebrating, while others are crying that their languages are disappearing.

This was my thought when I first read it. Why take off the native tongue absolutely. This doesn't make much sense

It seems the federal government are just looking for activities to make it look like they are busy cause this doesn't make any sense. English has always been the main language.

It should have been done before, however it's not late to change the education policy to have English as the medium of instruction in all school levels in Nigeria. My country uses English as the main medium of instruction in all schools, colleges and universities.

Mate, these people are just jobless becaue this makes no sense as English as always been the major language used in schools here

This makes sense as English is the lingua franca of the world; that said, continued side learning in indigenous languages isn't a bad thing.

Yes but then it shouldn't just be about English. We don't have to forget our culture and toots at the same time
