According to news, the Manila Electric Compan has announced to the public that there is an increase in household electricity rates by 28.34 centavos per kilowatt-hour, effective this February. This only means that homeowners can expect a higher electricity bill this February which results in an additional Php 57 for a customer consuming 200 kWh.
This hike in electricity is because of the increase in generation charges, which have boosted by 38.45 centavos per kilowatt-hour. This is primarily appertaining to higher costs obtained by Independent Power Producers. These fees have climbed by 83.55 centavos per kilowatt-hour, driven by some factors such as the weakening peso and more expensive fees at liquefied natural gas terminals.
In response to this rate increase, Meralco’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, Joe Zaldarriaga, has emphasized the importance of energy efficiency. In their advisory, they urge all customers to adopt energy-saving practices, especially as the summer months approach.
