The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has stopped 294 Nigerians from leaving the country over suspected smuggling activities and denied entry to 332 undocumented migrants at the Seme border.

Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, disclosed this on Tuesday, November 11, during a one-day stakeholders’ sensitization seminar in Abuja titled “Evolving Patterns in Smuggling of Migrants: Towards a Coordinated National Response.”

Nandap also revealed that the service recently rescued 36 victims of human trafficking and child labour along the Seme border, with the help of newly installed CCTV cameras that aided the interception of irregular migrants.

From my perspective, the actions of the Nigerian Immigration Service are an important step in the fight against human trafficking and irregular migration, problems that affect many countries in the region. The detention of nearly 300 people attempting to leave the country under suspicious circumstances and the denial of entry to many others without proper documentation demonstrate that concrete steps are being taken to strengthen border security. Furthermore, the use of technology such as CCTV cameras to rescue victims of trafficking and child labor indicates a genuine commitment to protecting human rights. However, I believe these actions must be accompanied by support and rehabilitation policies for victims, as well as efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration. Only in this way can a more comprehensive and effective long-term solution be achieved.
