The first bird flu case in the United States was reported in California, where a kid tested positive for the virus. Health officials gave preventive treatment to anybody who came into contact with the child at a daycare center. The child, from the San Francisco Bay Area, had moderate symptoms and is now healing at home with flu antivirals, according to the CDC. The child's family was tested, and the findings were all negative. Local officials also tested the families and caregivers at the daycare center. Initial tests revealed minimal amounts of the avian flu virus, implying that the youngster was probably not contagious at the time of testing. A follow-up test conducted four days later returned negative results. According to the director of the California Department of Public Health, "It's natural for people to be concerned, and we want to reassure parents, caregivers, and families that based on the information and data we have, we don't think the child was infectious."
