Tortures by the husband and in-laws for dowry is still prevalent in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. A few days back a young woman from Tamil Nadu committed suicide few dayds after her marriage not being able to tolerate the torture of her husband and in-laws. She did confide to her father that her husband and his family was torturing her but he asked her to adjust. She wrote a suicide note to her father " not anymore " before her death. It's the woman's family who should protest against dowry. Better keep the daughter at home than allow her die at the hands of her husband and in-laws.

I'm understanding women in your country averagely should avoid marriage at whatever cost (in the past, I had heard even cases of murder for the sake of dowry in your country: my history and geography school books reported such a happening). Better to emigrate elsewhere if they don't like singleness. That's another reason why a high (or at least medium) educational level is essential: it helps to find a job abroad.

Why is there dowry? That's only done by Muslims.
Hindus also, not only Muslims. Based on my history and geography books during my school's times, the families of husbands in such Indian regions are very greedy and men marry with the only purpose of obtaining a fortune for their parents.
