Two “high-end” vehicles, which were stolen in the Netherlands and shipped to Nigeria have been recovered by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Force spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, Oct. 20.

He said the vehicles were recovered in Lagos and Akwa Ibom states.

The police spokesperson said the investigation revealed that the vehicles were stolen from Amsterdam and Midden-Nederland.

Hundeyin said the vehicles were shipped to Nigeria and arrived in Apapa, Lagos, in late 2023 from the port of Antwerp in Belgium.

“Following the recovery, the Nigeria Police Force, through INTERPOL NCB Abuja, instituted civil forfeiture proceedings at the Federal High Court, Abuja,” the statement reads.

After two years after the cars were stolen! The owners didn't start in time to search for it. It is so unfortunate that some miscreants keep staining our international image black.

That’s actually impressive work by the Nigerian Police Force — it’s not every day you hear about international cooperation paying off like this. Recovering stolen luxury cars shipped all the way from the Netherlands to Nigeria shows that the authorities are starting to take transnational crime more seriously. Still, I can’t help but wonder how such vehicles manage to get through ports and customs in the first place. There’s clearly a network behind these operations, and unless that’s dismantled, we’ll keep seeing the same thing repeat. Kudos to INTERPOL and NPF for tracing them, but I hope this doesn’t just end with recovering cars — they need to dig deeper, find who’s running these smuggling rings, and close the loopholes that make it possible. Otherwise, Nigeria will keep being a convenient stop for stolen goods disguised as “imports.”
