Two suspects have been arrested for vandalism and theft of solar panels in Jonwuron Kparu, a remote village under Yashikiru Emirate in Kwara State.

It was gathered that the solar panels were donated and installed by an NGO to provide water for the community.

The suspects were nabbed on Saturday, September and paraded in the community before being tied up for punishment.

“This is the only power source of the pump providing water to the villagers, yet these desperate heartless fellows decided to steal these panels while destroying two in the process of removal,” a source wrote on Facebook

These types of incidents are truly sad because they show how a lack of awareness can seriously harm communities already living in extreme poverty. The solar panels installed in Jonwuron Kparu were not a luxury, but a vital necessity, as they represented the only source of energy for pumping water. Stealing them not only affects the infrastructure but also puts at risk the health and well-being of all the residents who depend on that supply.
It's positive that those responsible have been arrested, but it's also a call to strengthen security and community education. Often, those who commit these crimes do so out of necessity or because they are unaware of the social value of what they destroy. It would be ideal for the authorities, together with NGOs, to implement preventative measures and raise awareness so that the community understands that these resources are collective and essential for its development.
