News reports from Wednesday state that the United Arab Emirates and the Philippines established two agreements: a Pasig River rehabilitation project and a program to enhance both countries' governmental capacities. During the World Government Summit in Dubai, two memoranda of understanding were signed, one of which was a $20 million donation from the United Arab Emirates for the Pasig River rehabilitation. The First Lady of the Philippines, Liza Araneta-Marcos, led the Philippine Delegation to the summit and spoke about the Philippines' experience in cooperating with the private sector in helping to protect the environment and boosting the access of Filipinos to healthcare. Opening her progress report on the Pasig River project, she frankly stated the river's past neglect had left it a polluted and unpleasant 27-kilometer waterway running through Metro Manila.
