UK Tightens Asylum Policy

Now things in London have taken a new turn. The Labour government has decided to make major changes to asylum policies, following Denmark, which has been very strict on refugees. They want to remove the mandatory obligation to provide housing and money for some asylum seekers, especially those who can work but are just staying or who break the law.

Shabana Mahmood has made it clear that taxpayer support will be directed at those who contribute to the economy and society and not to people who stay without contributing. More than a hundred charities have written letters saying that these policies are fueling discrimination and violence. Polls show that immigration has now surpassed the economy as the biggest concern for voters. The situation has become as hot as a coal stove and the government wants to show an iron fist.

It is important to find a balance that protects human rights without undermining social cohesion. History teaches us that overly harsh policies can end up creating more problems than they solve.
