According to the report, the missile of the Ukrainian operational-tactical missile system Sapsan, known abroad under the name Grom-2, is capable of moving along an aeroballistic trajectory, performing unexpected maneuvers, which makes it a difficult target for anti-missile systems, said military analyst Dmitry Snegirev.
The report also stated that this capability significantly increases the probability of overcoming enemy air defense. The Russian Iskander OTRK has similar characteristics. According to him, the real range of the Sapsan can reach 500 km, which puts it on par with the German Taurus missiles and surpasses the American ATACMS, whose range is up to 300 km.Snegirev specified that Russian military airfields, including Millerovo and Baltimore, where frontline aviation is based, could be within the missile’s range, actively used to strike Ukrainian Armed Forces positions using guided aerial bombs.
The report added that within the radius of destruction are rear bases, both in the occupied and Russian territories. In his opinion, the presence of Ukraine's ballistic missiles could significantly undermine the enemy's logistics and change the political situation, depriving Russia of the opportunity to impose ultimatums. Military expert Valeriy Ryabykh from Defense Express added that thanks to its powerful warhead from 500 kg to 1 ton and long range, the Sapsan could play a key role in Ukraine's transition from a defensive strategy to a strategic offensive.
In addition, with the start of a full-scale war, the project received a new impetus. According to Romanenko, successful missile tests were conducted in 2023, and in May 2024, combat launches were conducted at a distance of 300 km. At that time, the Sapsan hit a Russian command post and Iskander missile launchers. Although the project was previously limited to a range of up to 270 km, even then, the design included a potential of 500 km. Among the system's strengths are its powerful warhead and advanced guidance system. Ukraine is currently working to ramp up production: the goal is to produce dozens and then hundreds of such missiles per month.
